The context

The framework combines payrolls, unemployment, participation, vacancies, wages, benefits, productivity, claims, consumer debt and saving with aging, fertility and migration. Several distinctions are essential: payrolls count jobs, the household survey counts people, and no universal monthly jobs threshold keeps unemployment steady under every population trend.

Distribution is essential. A national saving rate is a flow, not the amount of cash held by the typical family. Foreign-born employment is a population stock rather than a measure of current immigration or legal status. Annual population projections describe scenarios and assumptions; they do not create a new demographic observation each week.

What we track

Definitions and interpretation below describe our coverage. They are not live readings or mechanical buy/sell instructions.

01

Payroll growth and revisions

Changes in establishment-survey jobs, sector breadth, hours and revisions to prior estimates.

How to read it: A strong first estimate can later change. Compare consistent vintages and distinguish fewer new jobs from outright job losses; multiple jobholders can appear more than once.

02

Unemployment and participation

Household-survey unemployment, U-6 underutilization, employment-population and labor-force participation ratios.

How to read it: A lower unemployment rate can accompany labor-force exits. Prime-age measures reduce some aging effects but still need demographic and population-control context.

03

Vacancies, hiring and quits

JOLTS openings, hires, quits and layoffs, preserving whether each observation is a stock or monthly flow.

How to read it: Openings relative to unemployed people require matched months. Declining quits can indicate less worker confidence, but survey uncertainty and sector composition matter.

04

Wages and benefits

Employment Cost Index, hourly earnings and real purchasing-power measures using stated price deflators.

How to read it: Composition-adjusted compensation and average hourly wages answer different questions. Real pay also depends on hours; unit labor costs connect compensation with productivity.

05

Debt service and arrears

Scheduled household debt payments relative to income, plus loan-type balances and delinquency transitions.

How to read it: A payment burden is not the same as leverage. Keep transition rates separate from delinquent balance shares and preserve changes in reporting policy or methodology.

06

Demographic capacity

Working-age population, age composition, fertility and migration under explicitly dated estimates or projections.

How to read it: Potential labor supply depends on participation, hours and productivity as well as headcount. Aging does not mechanically determine inflation or government debt.

How we cover it

Weekly claims and monthly employment inform near-term conditions; quarterly debt and annual demographic measures provide structural context. The weekly news identifies new releases separately from figures carried forward.

Coverage includes income, real spending, saving, credit cards, auto loans, mortgages and student loans, with populations and denominators stated. Wage growth, debt stocks and repayment stress should be compared within compatible periods.

What the numbers can miss

Survey sampling, seasonal adjustment, benchmarks and population controls can revise apparent trends. A numeric move may be statistically little changed.

Discontinued financial-obligations and pandemic excess-saving series must remain historical. A low saving rate alone does not prove that every household has depleted reserves.
